Social Workers in the healthcare space are a connection between the residents, family members, and staff. They work to help families and residents navigate the new emotional, social and financial changes to their lives while advocating for them. They are a key role in helping the residents through counseling and connecting them to resources while they are on their way to recovery.

There are many skills that social workers will need throughout the day. Here are a few skills that many social workers will need:

  1. Communication: Social workers will be working with people of different ages and walks of life. It is important for a social worker to learn to communicate with their residents where they are at. Social Workers will help encourage the residents as they go through the care process. Some residents may also be non-verbal, and a social worker will need to find ways to connect with them. Communication between the social worker and staff is also important, especially if they notice that a resident needs something.
  2. Empathy: Social Workers should be able to empathize with the residents they work with. They need to be able to envision themselves in their shoes, and work to understand the struggles that their residents might encounter each day. This can help a social worker build a strong relationship with the residents and give them a new way of tackling problems.
  3. Organization: Social workers need to be able to organize their schedule between family visits, resident needs, and staff meetings. There is often documentation and paperwork social workers need to complete on a daily basis as well, so being organized can help social workers make the most of their day.
  4. Patience. Social workers need patience. It can take some time for residents to open up, and a social worker should be there for each step of the process. A friendly, kind ear can help residents feel open to sharing more through the changes they are going through.
  5. Flexibility. While social workers will often operate on a set schedule, sometimes resident needs arise and there will be times when a social worker will need to adapt. It is important for social workers to remain flexible and open to changing when last minute occurrences pop up.
  6. Passion. Social work is a field that requires those who work in it to have a passion for helping others. Many residents will come in with difficult situations, and a social worker needs to feel called to help those in their time of need.
  7. Learning. Social workers need to be able to stay up-to-date on current government and state policies, as well as learn to adapt to the changes that can come at a short notice. A social worker needs to always be open to learning and adapting to stay up-to-date with the best practices.
  8. Kindness. Kindness can go a long way in the social work field, from taking a moment to talk to a resident about something bothering them or giving a family member comfort when a challenge arises. Social Workers need to be shoulders to lean on, and show compassion when people need it most.
  9. Advocacy. Social workers are the connectors between residents, staff and families, and should be able to clearly communicate resident needs. This skill is important because a social worker needs to be able to communicate between all parties, as well as advocate for new programs and how to update outdated policies.

While this list doesn’t encompass all of the skills a social worker will need, this list is a guide for those looking to enter the social work industry.
